nobility

Today I heard this quote in one of my classes:

It was something I really needed to hear. Before I explain why this quote stood out to me, I need to explain that I grew up with all brothers & I'm the oldest. Competitiveness lives on the tips of my fingers and tongue, just waiting to unleash itself & prove myself. I want to be the smartest, prettiest, cleverest, funniest, most successful thing out there. Some of you might be saying, "Yeah right, she's just saying that." This probably means you have been fortunate enough to have only dealt with my shy & scared side. The side of me that says, "You don't know these people. You don't know everything. You're going to make a fool of yourself if you try to prove yourself right now." Then there's those who truly know me, who are probably nodding their heads right now.

This quote hit me because nobility is a beautiful thing. Not the haughty-taughty, affluent, throne-sitting nobility that we see in movies sometimes. I'm talking about the elegant, praiseworthy, and selfless nobility. That's what I want. I want that kind of nobility. I think everyone does. According to this quote, you don't have to be better than someone else to obtain nobility. All you have to do is be better than you were the day before. I just think that sounds so much better than comparing myself to other people and pushing my way to the top every chance I get. Don't you?
